Cyberbullying is a growing concern for adolescents, but those with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs)—such as FASD, ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities—are at increased risk of being both victims and perpetrators. The scoping review on managing cyberbullying among adolescents with NDDs highlights the unique challenges these individuals face in online interactions, including difficulties with social communication, impulse control, and interpreting online cues. While general cyberbullying prevention programs exist, there is limited research on effective interventions specifically designed for adolescents with NDDs.
Considerations for Educators
Educators should incorporate FASD- and NDD-informed practices into cyberbullying prevention efforts by:
• Providing structured learning: Teach students about online safety, responsible social media use, and strategies to handle cyberbullying.
• Building social-emotional skills: Support students in understanding online communication norms, managing emotions, and resolving conflicts.
• Fostering a safe environment: Promote inclusivity and peer support to reduce the likelihood of social isolation that can lead to online vulnerability.
• Collaborating with caregivers: Ensure consistent messaging and intervention strategies between home and school.
